Then you don't connect it to TV, the TV can't play surround with 2 speakers, you must go:

Cable ---> AV Receiver ---> TV

Then the AV receiver will take the surround information and play it in all its glory on its various speakers.

If your TV doesn't have audio outputs and your cable box only has HDMI you will need an HDMI audio extractor like this one

Use the digital audio output if your surround sound has a digital input.

Now what? I have ARC for the tv.... av is going to the ARC for the tv. But to get the cable to have sound, I have to have an HDMI separate... the sound supposedly is coming through the Home theatre, and it does, ... but I can't figure out whether when I attempt to tweak the sound (which is only through the BluRay set up) if I'm actually tweaking the home theatre for the cable ... since there is no hdmi to the receiver? confused yet? I've been confused since I purchased the Viera Panasonic with "bluray awesome home theatre" in 2010.
