Upgrade i5-480M to i7-3610QM

My friend has a Toshiba Satellite A665 S5179, with an i5-480M. I can get him an i7-3610QM for $20, and am wondering if it will fit and work. I know his current processor is not soldered to the motherboard, and I know his cooling system can handle the i7. Would the i7 fit? And if it does, could I install it? I believe the i7 will fit, but am not sure. Here is information on both processors:

No, it definitely will not work. An Intel first generation socket can't accept an Intel third generation CPU. Check the ARKs that you posted for the socket support and you will see that they are not the same.

So socket wise it "should" be compatible, however your issue may fall into the BIOS, where that laptop if it never had that processor may not work with it anyway even if it fits and connects.

For $20 its a small monetary gamble, but being that you have to take the entire laptop apart to do it, theres a pretty big risk of breaking something.

I've already taken the entire laptop apart twice, so I'm fine on that front. I can get the processor, let him test it, and then he buys it. If I put it in, what's the worst that could happen? Would it damage anything if it was incompatible?

Even if the socket is the "same", the electrical and other specs may have changed and the differences may be significant enough to fry both the CPU and motherboard. On the desktop side of things, those two CPU generations are on sockets that physically differ by merely one pin and aren't interchangeable due to Intel shuffling pins/pads around.
