I am thinking about buying a Lenovo ThinkPad T540p but i am concerned about how long this laptop will last me.I will be using it for mostly school and some moderate gaming.
Core i7-4700M
8 GB RAM
500 GB (HDD)
GeForce GT 730M
15.5", 2880x1620 pixels
UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+

Will this laptop be usable in about 5 years

i am buying this from a friend for $500.

Lenovo makes decent laptops, but 5 years on top of a 3 year old laptop is not very realistic in my opinion. You would be better off in buying a new laptop for $500. Also $500 for that laptop is overpriced.

Price is not bad for that model, but I would skip it at $500, especially for games. It would last for many years, but the video card is too slow, especially if you combine it with the high res screen.

For $750-800 you can get a much faster laptop (for gaming) with a full new warranty.

If you are getting it for general use, then it's a good fast system, but for general use you can get a new decent system for about that much. It's a pretty specific market for that model, mainly business use that need a high res screen and a fast CPU, like for large Excel spreadsheet work or CAD use.
