Price range is under 400, I've mostly been in the 300 range. I'm pretty impatient though. Can I get a fairly good result from something along the lines of Astro A40's that I can just go pick up from best buy. I've considered the A50's but i'm not sure those are compatible with a soundcard i thought they just used their little controllor.

I would appreciate it greatly if anyone could tell me about A50 and xonar compatibility.

Or is it just generally unanimous that I need to order maybe some Sennheiser's?

I Really don't want a microphone with it. Durability is important. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Solution
with that kind of budget you may want some decent headphones instead of a gaming headset.

something like a hd598 should be powered fine by your dx.

or, if you bought an external amplifier you could use a beyer dt990, dt880 or perhaps akg q701
