Odd laptop screen bug

This is not a original picture of the laptop, its recreated as we could not take a screenshot of what it looked like. So my friends laptop randomly did this one day and we have no clue what the hell happened or how it happened. If anyone knows, informing me would be much appreciated.

What kind of device is it? Did it only happen the one time, and now stopped, or is it stuck doing that?

Also, have you tried hooking up an external monitor to see if the problem persists on there? (Turn off the laptop, plug in the external monitor, turn on the monitor and then finally turn on the laptop.)

If it doesn't happen on the external monitor, the your display on the laptop is probably going. If it also occurs on the external one, then the graphics card may well need to be replaced.
