VAIO power on issue

Hi all,

I recently had to open up my VAIO VGN-SZ 4MN/B in order to check a sound problem (I teared it apart and replugged the cables). Before putting back the keyboard and the speakers/buttons cover I turned it on to check the sound. No sound, but the computer worked. So I put back the keyboard and the cover, and this is when trouble began :

The computer turns on (power LED and fan on), but the screen doesn't light up at all (no backlight), and the HDD does not run. As I have no sound (probably the sound card is dead, but that's another issue), I couldn't hear, if any, the beeps. The only sound is the DVD-ROM checking for a disk, as usual.

I tried to tear it apart again, replug everything, but the problem persists

Here are some other tests I made :
- Turn it on with no CPU : it turns off after a second
- Turn wireless on/off (the button includes wifi and bluetooth) : it toggles the bluetooth LED. The wifi LED stays off.
- Turn it on with the CPU in but no RAM : no change, even the wireless toggle works.

Is it a RAM problem as it seems to be according to the tests, or something else like the motherboard ?

Thank you for your time and help. Let me know if you want me to check some other stuff.

I have to say I find it really odd that it all occurred after you opened it up and now nothing is running correctly. Including the original sound problem.

I had to think on it a while, but you may well be correct about the ram. But before pulling it apart again...

I do have an odd question. Did you leave the battery in when you took it apart? Sometimes, well that can cause it not to work correctly after being put back together. If so (it was left in) Try the following and see if it will turn on (sometimes simple works).

1. First make sure the device has been charged.
2. Unplug your charger cord.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press and hold the "Power" button for 30 seconds and see if the device will turn on.
5. If it does, great, now plug back in the power/charger cord. (If it didn't turn on without the cord in, it should turn on once you it is in.)
6. Now put the battery back in.

If that doesn't work, then I would start with the ram. And do let us know what happens. :)

Thank you for your interest in my problem,

I have a question though, did I understand well ? I have to turn it on without charger (removed at step 2) and without battery (removed at step 3) ? On what energy would it turn on then ?

So I tried to power on with no battery and no cord, nothing happened. And when I plugged everything back in, same problem : HDD does not run so on .. So I'll try and get my hands on some RAM to see if it helps
