Hey guys and gals,

Soon I am buying a fx 6300(cpu) to go with my m5a78l-m lx3(mobo).

I already have the mobo as I got it for free.

So my question is this, I was told I would have to update my bios in order to work the pc. But will I be able to put the cpu in and have it function enough to update the bios without buying a cheaper already compatible cpu.

Thanks in advance guys and gals

Depends on what the current BIOS version is. The default (oldest) and 0201 and you need to have version 0702. If it currently has 0702 or 1201, you should be good to go. If not, you will need to update the BIOS for the processor to work correctly.

As for whether or not that processor will work sufficiently to update the BIOS (should it need it), that's a better question for motherboard manufacturer as doing so is very much motherboard/processor dependent.

Depending on the age of the board you may not need a bios update. That said if the BIOS does not have support for that processor it Will not boot with it. You need to find someone who has an older processor that does work to update the BIOS, or sometimes you can get updated BIOS chips on ebay that you can swap out.
