I'm on Windows 10. My notebook has a Nvidia GTX 970M. When I connect my notebook to my external monitor (screen of my notebook is off) and I want to play a video on full screen on Youtube (in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge) or try to watch a movie on the Netfix app, then my screen goes black but I still hear the sound. I have already downloaded the latest drivers for my GPU, disabeled hardware acceleration in Google Chrome, re-installed Silverlight but nothing works. This problem is only when I want to watch in full screen mode. In the theater mode or a small Youtube box, there is not a problem.

Solution
You should start with checking the monitors drivers. It may be using just a generic driver for it. Try downloading and installing the latest drivers for that particular monitor.

Also, if the computer didn't come with windows 7, or you are using an older monitor that doesn't really have updated drivers, you could try this. Run the driver supplied by the manufacturer in "Windows 7 compatibility Mode" and then install the monitor driver. Odd, but it sometimes is the way to resolve the issue.
