As stated in the title, I'm looking to set up a decent system for some AM/FM tunes in my garage. The catch is, I want to use a small radio that only has a 3.5mm jack. I read that it may be possible to use it with an amplifier to push the signal to a set of small speakers. My audio wiring knowledge is limited, so I'm not really sure if what I googled is correct. The only time I've ever dealt with an amp was in a car, so I'm a bit concerned on how it would be powered as well.

Solution
A single 3.5mm to RCA is not technically challenging. I just wanted to throw out the option of pawn shop / E-Bay home stereo equipment. That is what I use in my garage. I also recommend weatherproof (outdoor) speakers, even if you are mounting them indoors. The humidity variations in a garage are not unlike an under cover outdoor environment.

I reckon you're right, but it's the challenge of trying to do it the way I asked about that interests me I guess.
