Hi there, I need some advice on choosing a camera please.

I’ve been putting off my purchase for a new digital camera for a while now and since I have an event coming up on Friday morning this seems as good a time as any.

Brief background: I owned a Canon Powershot A95 for a good 7 years and captured some wonderful moments with it but due to a faulty lens had to get rid of it. Over the last 3-4 years I’ve been relying on my smart phone camera, which, as it goes without saying was just about adequate. As for my photography skills I’m still very much a novice/amateur but with some experience. I am thinking of getting a decent camera to build on my current skills and learn a thing or two about photography.

Intended purpose of new camera: mainly to take snaps of family, friends, use on holiday etc. I’d like to buy a general all-purpose camera (similar to the A95) that is capable of taking photos and to an extent videos to a high quality under most conditions. I’d like a camera that can take high resolution photos (15 million pixels or more), ideally with touchscreen capabilities, WIFI, portability etc. My budget is around £300. I know that for my budget I may not be able to find everything that I’d want so the emphasis for me is good quality photos under most conditions.

I have been doing some reading and I’m not sure if I should go in for a changeable lens camera or a fixed lens camera. I’ve never owned a changeable lens camera and I don’t intend on buying additional lenses in the future. I’d like a multi-purpose all-around camera that can take high quality photos. However, I’ve been told that cameras with changeable lens can take better quality photos but are somewhat limited in their function.

I am unsure whether I should go for a Nikon J1 M5 or Canon EOS M10 or Sony A5000 or a Sony DSC RX 100 II as these are all within my price range but with the first 3 being mirrorless cameras and the RX 100 II being a compact digital camera.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

For that budget, none of those mirrorless cameras are in your budget, since even a cheap kit package gives you no overhead for memory and an additional battery (necessary with mirrorless cameras). Likewise the RX100 II is likely going to be >400, well above your 300 limit (in USD the RX100 II retails for ~$650). If you go used you might be in budget.

Here's two that should replace the A95 quite nicely and give you enough for large memory cards too:
