Email from a different country

I want to be able to access my main email from the country I will be visiting, last time I was there I was not able to log in.. What should I do before I go to make sure I can log in? It is a gmail account

Gmail accounts can be accessed from anywhere in teh world. No previous measures required. Just have your phone on you with your local number in it in case google decides it want to check that it's you.

Is your roaming data plan set up? You are confusing perhaps being able to access internet data abroad with being able to access. There are no restrictions to log on to gmail accounts . Hop on a free wifi @ hotel, surf to google, log in, done.
