Like many professionals, I cannot afford to lose my projects and data due to a computer malfunction, cloud screw-up, or anything else. Through dropbox, google drive, etc, I already sync the cloud and computer content, across both my Macbook and Desktop running Windows and OSX. However, I want to add a 3rd medium to back up to in the form of an external drive. If I use rsync in OSX and something like desynchronized on windows to sync the google drive/dropbox folders to the external drive, will that cover all the bases?

Solution
Yes.

However, I would sync to the third location directly from the computer(s) versus sync to cloud/google drive etc and then another sync to the third location.

Every step in the process is another possible point failure point.

The important part is that you can verify that that backups worked and that you can truly recover your data content. Test.

Hopefully your cloud "locations" are doing their own backups so backing those locations up is not really necessary per se.

Still you are free to do your own third location backup from/via the cloud if you wish to do so.
