I am currently looking at some new headphones for gaming and I was looking for some recommendations. The ones I have reading reviews on are the AD900x, DT990/770 pro 250 ohm, Q701, Sony MDR-V6, and Philips x2. The headphones will also be used for things like music and movies. The type of music I listen to is Electric swing, rap, hip-hop, pop, and alternative. the headphones will be used for comp games like, CS:GO, Squad, insurgency, and for casual games Subnautica, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, The Long Dark, torchlight 2, and stardew valley (I have no idea if listing this helps) . I understand for headphones that have a high Impedance I will more than likely need a amplifier to get the most out of the headphones and I am willing to buy one a little down the road. Would you recommend that I get a dedicated sound card like the Sound Blaster Zx PCie or an amp and a dac like the Schiit stack magni and modi. If you have any recommendations for any other headphones you recommend that I should look at please make sure that it's nothing over $300. also I live in the middle of nowhere so I can't go and test out any of the headphones I have listed since their is no place for me test them out so thats out of the question.

other headphones worth looking at... hd598 or hd600/hd650. they are fairly neutral and a bit more mellow.

ad900x will be bass light, big soundstage and treb/mid focused. comfortable if you like the headband (its a love or hate scenario).

dt770 will be bassy. 80ohm is most bassy while 250ohm is more refined. it is fairly heavy v-shaped. soundstage is not bad for a closed can.

dt990 is similar but less bassy and with somewhat less v-shaped edge.

not listed but dt880 is a bit more neutral with less bass push and treble harshness

akg cans generally are treb/mid focused with not so much bass. you can compare to things like the ad900x. they tend to be hard to drive and very picky about source and amps. on good equipment they sound great...

not so familiar with the x2 and v6 other than i know they are other good headphones.

what works best for you depends on what you value the most. bass light cans will give you the most advantage in fps games (bass covers gunshots so treb/mid focused cans are ideal) while they would be less fun to listen to unless you're not a bass fan. v-shaped cans will be more fun to listen to, but not quite as advantageous for gaming. neutral is a bit between them but may sound flat or a bit boring to some. none is the right pick, it depends on your preferences.

as far as amps, it depends on what you pick. some choices are fine with a soundcard, some would warrant an amplifier. schiit stack is good, but if you want virtual surround you might want to run something like a xonar dx + schiit magni for the virtual surround support of the soundcard. you could use a stack and use razer virtual surround but its not as good. of course if you dont give a hoot about virtual, just use a stack. o2+odac is a good alternative.
