Acer 5100-5022 Battery Question

Acer 5100 is 9.5 years old. Came with Win XP, but I formatted HDD and installed Ubuntu Linux a few years ago. Mostly use it at home, and left adapter plugged in all the time. Amber battery led was always on, green led on when powered up. (Just took it for 'short trips' to fast food place during my breakfast.)

Just replaced my battery, followed the instructions to discharge to 2%, then charge. But new battery never fully charges, just goes up to 50-60%, and amber battery led on front panel is always flashing.

Two questions:
- Is the amber flashing light indicating that the 'charging function' is operating? (I've had the adapter plugged in all the time, so I really can't remember---and the Acer manual doesn't clarify).
- I've tested the AC adapter with a v/o meter, and it puts out 19.2 volts (and operates the laptop fine when plugged in). So, is the consensus that the battery is likely defective and should be returned?

I've read many threads on this site and others, and it seems that would be the problem. Comments please, thanks!

Well, after messing with this for quite a while (after posting the above message), I believe that my problems run deeper than a battery situation. Things are acting very erratic, I can't really pin anything down. Sometimes it will boot up with just the adapter plugged in, sometimes with only battery, sometimes with both---and sometimes not at all! My wife has pointed out that 9.5 years for a laptop is quite good, and I should move on. Whatever the problem really is, it is likely nothing that would be a cheap fix. So, taking my wife's advice.....marked this as "solved."
