Hi!

As the title says my laptop has been shutting down on its own lately. To describe what happens it's like when you unplug the power with the battery not inserted. There are no clear signs as to when it's gonna happen. Sometimes it happens when it's in idle, sometimes when I'm watching a video, or browsing the net, and so on. I keep my laptop almost 24/7 on if that has something to do with anything.

My laptop is at least 5-6 years old and has been working perfectly until now so before giving me suggestions here's some things to consider:
- it's probably not a driver or software issue causing the shutdown since I haven't updated the drivers for the past 5-6 years I've been using it and the only software I install are games and some programming software that's been with me for years as well.
- it's probably not a heat problem because I clean the fan, vent, et.al. also replaced the thermal paste last month and lubricated the cooling fan.
- it's probably not a HDD problem since I ran it through some tests already and it passed with flying colors.
- it's not a virus, malware, spyware issue.

Any ideas on why this is happening and suggestions on how to fix it?

Hi,

Since you've already done some troubleshooting with your laptop chances are either the motherboard or the AC adapter is faulty already. Here are some basic troubleshooting steps that may help.
- First is to test the AC adapter, remove the battery off the laptop then power it on with just the AC adapter connected and observe if the same problem will persist or not.
- Do try a different AC adapter first if the same problem will happen. And again if a different AC adapter will result to the same problem then the problem lies inside the motherboard.
- Given the age of the laptop, the motherboard may be faulty already
