I just received my ASUS ROG GL502VT with a GTX 970M. While playing Overwatch, using the NVIDIA GeForce Experience Optimized settings, the GPU reaches 86c within minutes. Is this an acceptable temperature? The surface of the laptop above the keyboard gets very hot to the touch which leaves me concerned.

Acceptable to who? To me? To me? Let's see. The maximum operating temp is 100C. That is aka 212F or the boiling point of water at sea level. Anything above 85F would be a huge concern for me. This would only apply with laptops. If my desktop's 970 exceeded 70, I would be concerned. Laptops generally run hotter.

When is the last time you used canned air to clean out your exhaust fan and other parts of your laptop?

What is the average ambient temperature when you are gaming?

Do you use a laptop pad like https://www.amazon.com/HAVIT-HV-F2056-Laptop-Cooler-Cooling/dp/B00NNMB3KS/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1465659277&sr=1-2&keywords=15.6+laptop+cooler ?

86C? Acceptable? Nope. Some people routinely game with their GPU at that temp., on both laptops and PCs. Do I think they're right in doing so? Nope. But we all have opinions.

The machine is less than 2 hours old so cleaning intake/exhaust with canned air isn't the issue.

Ambient temp in the low to upper 70s F.

No cooling pad used either, would prefer to not need one.

Where is the laptop usually used? On what surface? If it is a soft surface then I can only assume the intake/exhaust fan(s) are being blocked or partially blocked impeding the cooling.

Overwatch is demanding so I would expect the 970 to be working it's tail off. You may try another cooling solution like https://www.amazon.com/LC05-Cooling-Auto-Temp-Detection-Compatible/dp/B00XKU47Y2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1465660464&sr=8-2&keywords=laptop+vacuum+fan .

http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/asus-rog-strix suggests this heat is a known issue.

"But scorching temperatures during gameplay and a lackluster sound system prevent this rig from being the best we've tested."

Maybe return that beast of a system and do some research in a powerful but cool running laptop.

Used only at my desk which is glass. I've done some testing with different graphics configs and the temp stays in the mid to upper 70c on "Medium" but will get to mid 80c on "High" and of course the scorching 86c when using the optimized settings. Using the same optimized settings on my wife's computer (G751 w/GTX 970m), temp stayed in the mid to upper 60c so it seems it's a problem with the cooling design on the Strix.

Yep, going to return it and get something else. Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

This http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA8S13MM7865 is about $100 more but multiple reviews do comment on its cooling abilities, in a positive way. It does come with a 970m. It comes with a 512GB SSD instead of the platter based 1TB drive. It comes with the same i7 that the ROG has. It has an IPS screen.

Hope you're back to gaming soon. Glad I could help.

I'm having the same issue, with the same PC it's less that a week old and when running games like Watchdogs or Shadow of Mordor, the computer gets really hot. I wouldn't mind the temperatures so much given it's so light and so quiet, if the performance stayed at an acceptable level. Even running games that run fine at MAX settings on my Desktop PC with a 970 with 50+ FPS. Running them on this laptop with Medium settings causes severe drops in FPS and temperatures as high as 97 degrees (C). I know the 970 and the 970m are basically two different cards with the 970m being weaker but I was expecting 3/4 the performance not.. less than half..

Problem is I already installed a new SSD (1 TB) and switched the OS to it, as well as changed the thermal paste on the heatsink to ArticSilver (which helped.. some.. about 5 degrees).
