AMD rx 480, should I wait for the laptop version of the card?

Well, AMD just announced the rx 480, set to come out at the end of June for $200. Should I wait for an m version to be released, or? I have been waiting a bit to buy a gaming laptop that'll last me about 4 years for college. Do you think I'll be able to get my hands on one with a 480 in before August?

Solution
Nvidia does not always have better performance. You have no idea how well polaris will do when there are no cards out to be tested. It's all conjecture.

Completely wrong, they do make GPus but the downside is that amd mobile chips are not even comparable to nvidia they are hot running and lower performing.

They thats what i meant, they are no where near gaming performance although you can play games like league of legends and other low graphic intensive games.

What exactly is pascal/polaris, and how long do you think I'll have to wait for either one? I'm more of a team red guy, so I'd prefer polaris already, but I know Nvidia is great in the laptop market with their GPUs.

The polaris laptops would most likely be more budget friendly than Nvidias pascal laptops. So it depends on how much you are willing to pay for a laptop.

I'd be willing to pay almost up to $2000 if it'll let me play games on at least medium/low settings in 4 years.

Stop really. Look at any of the mobile r9 and they can play on ultra like nvidia, not low. Just because nvidia had the top spot doesn't mean amd had nothing powerful.

Polaris more budget friendly? Stop for the third time. Both nvidia and amd have different models at different price points and there is no telling how well polaris will do to see price/performance comparison.

Polaris/pascal is the codenames for amd/nvidia next(or current actually now) gen architecture. They should be coming out at a similar time as desktop. All I saw was mid 2016.

Thank you! I'd pick this as the solution but I accidentally picked the other one.

Polaris is aimed towards the mainstream market so they can get some ground back. Their rx480 is priced at $199. Polaris is not aiming towards beating pascal's high end market. If Random Person has $2000 then he should go with pascal because that will be high end. Please the linus tech tips video about the rx 480.

There will be higher end polaris. There's a reason it's only $200 and has 4 or 8gb vram versions. It's only a mid range card. Amd is starting the release of polaris in the mid range vs nvidia starting at the higher end. There are plenty of models above that, 480x, 490, 490x to compare to the 1080, 1080ti, or new titan and probably have another fury named card up higher.

Hopefully the higher end polaris cards will be sold in laptops before August?

Assuming Nvidia is able to cutdown pascal enough so that it doesn't burn a hole through the laptop. AMD's chips are much closer to being laptop ready. Nvidia has to release the 1060 and 1050 before it even thinks about putting it's higher end chips into laptops. There may be a laptop or two that just but a whole desktop chip in them but with pascal you would be able to game for 20 minutes tops and it would throttle.
