Hello everyone!

TL;DR- I want a laptop that can handle programming, will have decent battery life, is fast (preferably an i7 and an SSD), and (while not required) has a decent graphics card to handle light gaming/ video rendering.

I'm an incoming college freshman pursuing a degree in computer science and am going to purchase a new laptop for my school work. I've done a lot of thinking and i've decided that I want a slim laptop that is fast (a SSD and 16 gigs of RAM). I would also appreciate a decent graphics card to handle some video rendering/ light gaming. Design and aesthetic are only slightly important (though a nice looking laptop is always nice!). I also need fairly decent battery life (at least 8 hours so I can get through a full college day without charging). I've been seriously considering the Razer Blade 14" (2015 model) but saw that many people reported very bad heat issues. I also looked at the XPS 15 but noticed that many found the battery life to be a bit on the low side. So I haven't really found any great comprises. That's where you come in! I would greatly appreciate some help from the community here. My price range is between $1,000.00 - $1700.00. Again, a nice graphics card would be nice for light gaming and video rendering but is not required! I just want a laptop that will last long and that I can code on (so preferably 16 gigs of ram)

Thanks so much everyone and I hope to get some good responses.
