Hey guys. I recently wanted to set up my home theater speakers to my PC.i am running windows 10 and I have a 5.1 system. I went out and bought a optical cable to connect from my motherboard (Asus Z-87 Pro) to my older Sherwood RD-8601 reciever. I downloaded Realtek and i believe i have version R2.79 but now none of my speakers are working. I have the volume all the way up in realtek and I started running Ark to see if any sound would pump out but there was no sound at all. Im not sure what i did wrong but i just want my surround sound to work! Thanks for all the help in advance!

This is going to sound obvious, but you've set your computer to output through the optical in windows, (Right click the little speaker icon in taskbar, select playback devices, then right click spdif and select 'set as default').

On some amps you need to allocate the optical INPUT to a channel i.e., say you select CD player, by default it will use the RCA (Red/White) inputs. You go into the setup menu of your amp and select the Optical INPUT that you've plugged the cable into as the source and allocate that as the input for CD.

Good Luck.

The thing is, is that my remote for my receiver doesn't work so I can't set it how it say to in the manual. Is there another way to set it or do I just have to get rid of the optical cable and go a different route to achieve what I want?
