I have an Asus labtop and I plugged my xbox into my labtop with an HDMI cable but nothing came up, shouldn't the labtop work as a screen for my labtop? how do I get my labtop to display my xbox
No. The HDMI port on your laptop is output only. With a USB3 interface you might be able to use a video capture device, but it is probably just as cheap to buy a monitor that has multiple inputs and use it with the laptop as a second display and with the XBox.

Oh how we all wish for such a feature, but no, Video ports are Inputs only or Outputs only, never both. All the HDMI ports that are included on laptops are Output only.

Actually, I believe the 2015 Alienware 18 had an HDMI input. Also the 2014 and older Alienware 17, if memory serves. I think the HDMI input has since been replaced with a port to hook up their external GPU "amplifier" (or whatever they call it).
