How much would my laptop be worth selling to a private party?

Solution
If you can get 400 dollars for it, sell it, because it would be worth it then. I just don't think it's likely you'll be able to get that for it unless all the right conditions come together that lead to finding the perfect buyer willing to pay 400 bucks for a two year old used laptop.

I don't think you'd get enough to justify selling it.

You would probably be better to keep the laptop and save a bit more for your PC.

That way you also have the laptop for if anything goes wrong with the desktop.

I agree. You can find those for 200 bucks all day long on ebay or craigslist, and for two bones it's probably worth keeping. Resale value for mobile electronics is meager in almost all cases. You might see people asking more for them, but that doesn't mean they're getting that price or that units are actually selling. I'd recommend keeping it and just saving a bit longer to make up for the difference.

Thats probably the most logical thing to do. If I was able to get $400 on it though, it would cover around half of the completed build, not looking for anything fancy. Thank you both though! I will sit on it.

I had a sager that was a year and a half old paid $1500 and got $1400. It can happen but most of the time just opening a computer loses 30% of the value.

The best brands as far as resale are Apple, and Lenovo. Dells somewhat hold value those are really the ones that will sell well almost for no reason other than brand name.
