My dad recently bought Rosetta stone so he wants a laptop of his own.
1.My/his budget is $240
2.My dad likes to be on the couch or in bed when using any type of electronic so I want a laptop that is not too small but also not too big
3.I really don't care about resolution as long as it's not crappy
4.I just need a portable laptop no desktop replacement
5.A normal battery life is okay
8.My dad will want to download music and other things as time goes by so a reasonable size hdd is fine
6.Games aren't a necessity, but would be nice to at least play some games (you know whenever someone needs an extra laptop to play too)
7.My dad likes to watch videos and just browse the internet so no demanding tasks whatsoever
9.I was planning on buying from Newegg, but will also buy from any other website as long as it's a reputable site
11.A DVD/CD rom is a must have for him
12.Any brand is okay really as long as it won't blow up
13.I live in the USA

For your price, the only new systems you will find are very slow ones, that will not play any games outside of basic online games that involve clicking colored blocks.

This may be good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G3V60541 but you may need an external DVD drive.
This also, same thing with needing an external DVD drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2F83WK7134

You need to basically look at used systems if you want something with a DVD drive that you can install Rosetta Stone on. There are plenty of HP EliteBooks and Lenovo T420 models for about $250 that will be good, although I would not except battery life to be more than an hour or two on those.

If your dad is willing to get an external DVD drive, he can get a pretty decent web-surfing laptop for under $200. Our favorite in this price range is the Lenovo Ideapad 100S (http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-100s) which weighs just over 2 pounds, lasts over 9 hours on a charge and has a bright screen. It also comes with a free year of Office 365!
