Hello,

I’m very confused about what speakers should I get to my gaming pc. I use it for gaming and music and I have a good sound card (msi z87-g45 motherboard). So... Should I get a hi-fi system I know someone that is selling a used Marantz pm-6003 amp and Wharfedale diamond 10.1 with a DAC for 600$ used? Or should I get m-audio bx5 carbon for 400$ (2 speakers)?

Solution

Ah, OK. The simple answer is yes the 2 systems you are looking at would have better sound than the Z906.

The more I am thinking on...

See if you can audition the amp and speakers first. Obviously with the amp you are looking at a product that is over 6 years old, but got great reviews and paired with those speakers and dac would do a good job. The price seems a bit expensive though as brand new that package (using http://www.whathifi.com/marantz/pm6003/review and http://www.whathifi.com/wharfedale/diamond-101/review) as a guide was £500.

Looking at the specs for the M-Audio, the Wharfdale's go slightly lower, 48 Hz compared to 56 Hz, but as I said, see if you can listen to both setups.

I have studio monitors myself (different brand) and like them.

thanks for the reply
i live in lebanon so the prices are a bit high.
i went to the shop and listned to the m-audio, what im afraid of is that the m-audio are studio speakers and it gives you the all the sounds (honest speaker). so will the wharfedale and the marantz perform better in terms of sound quality (cz i play games and music) and what would u recommend the price of the marantz, the wharfedale, and the DAC used?

Studio monitors are inherently a 'neutral' sounding speaker, compared to audio speakers which may be tuned differently, but that's not to say that monitors aren't any good for music or games, as that's what I use.

As to a good price for the marantz package, i honestly don't know, it's just that $600 seemed pricey for a 6+ year old product, that brand new would have been £500. Have a look and see what similar products are going for in Lebanon.

Good Luck.

For ease of use and a smaller footprint, yes the studio speakers will actually be a better buy. For flexibility the amp/speaker combo have the advantage.

Sonically, looking at the stats, the amp/speaker combo has a slightly lower bass, but I can't tell you if one is going to sound 'better' than the other. Only you can tell that by listening to the same music in the same room that you will have them set up. Now I know that's probably not possible, but that's the reality of it.

Whoa there Hamda, now your jumping to a 5.1 system lol, compared to a stereo setup. I honestly can't answer this.

the thing that i bought the z906 for 100$ (the seller wants to travel) i loved the sound of the speakers and i only use 2 speakers (stereo) and the subwoofer cz i cant fit all the speakers on a pc desk. i then thought of hi-fi and studio monitors. so is the hi-fi or studio monitors be superior to the stereo sound of the z906?????

Ah, OK. The simple answer is yes the 2 systems you are looking at would have better sound than the Z906.

The more I am thinking on it, for your solution, would be to get the studio monitors.

Here is my reasoning:
They will be new, compared to second hand, so there will be warranty.
The studio monitors have built in amp's, smaller footprint. (take up less room)
Very similar sonic range on the amp/speaker combo,
They are nearfield speakers, so suit as a desktop solution.
(I personally use JBL LSR305 studio monitors, the ones you are looking at will be just as good)

The only extra you will need to buy would be a 3.5mm to 1/4 splitter like this

Good Luck.

man you are helping me alot. thank you.
so if i want to build a hifi system aux/ phono/CD.... compatible with a dac and speakers it will cost be more than 400$, right?
the 600$ system comes with 2 stands for the wharfedale's and copper connectors, i talked to him to bring the price down to 500$ but he didnt agree.
the m-audio BX5 cost like 370$ in lebanon, but how can i let the speaker act like a multimedia speaker, not a studio speaker?

I can't answer the first one easily as I'm not too sure of what is available where you live.

The second question about the m-audio is easy to answer, you use playback software with inbuilt equaliser like VLC media player or Foobar2000 and adjust the playback to sound how you like ;)
