Connect PC to 5.1 receiver.

Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a home cinema set with 5.1 sound. This set includes a receiver wich i would like to connect to my pc. The receiver and my motherboard are listed below. I currently have a triple monitor setup connected to my pc and a crossfire setup in my pc. All hardware is linked below. I was wondering how i could connect my pc to the receiver, having 5.1 sound.

The inputs occupied on the receiver are:
1 Optical audio input
1 coaxial input
and ofcourse all the speaker outputs.

My hardware is:
GPU: 2x r9-270x
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97 HD3
The receiver: Yamaha HTR-2067
Monitors: 3x Lg 22MP65

that receiver also has hdmi input.

you have 3 options basically:

if they are not any more than 60hz monitors, you could path one as pc->receiver->monitor and use video passthrough to get the image to the monitor. not sure if there will be a slight delay or not with this method (test it) but you can definitely get audio.

if you want to avoid that and you have a spare hdmi or dvi output, you can route that spare output to the receiver and use it as an audio only lane. it will show up as a spare monitor but only in name - it will only work for audio.

why the push for hdmi? uncompressed full quality audio.

the last option would be via optical. if your receiver and pc both support DDL/DTS-C you can get 5.1 over optical. it will be a...

Thanks you very much, if i use the hdmi cable as an audio only output as you suggested, do i need to plug it into the motherboard or in my main gpu?
