Hello,

I have a Lenovo y40 that I have been having graphics card driver issues. A couple of days ago I went to start a game, it went to a BSOD and an error message reading 0xa0000001. Now whenever I start any game it does that. I tried reinstalling the official Lenovo AMD drivers located on their website but as soon as I shut down the computer it went to BSOD with the same error message. I also did a complete factory reset but the problem is still there.

The battery on the laptop doesn't hold much charge and I have been having problems getting it to charge. I researched the graphics card error and it said something about the graphics card was not able to get enough power, so would that be my issue? Although it would seem that the power supply would provide enough power to power the card.

The problem is with the graphics card because games wil start when running in the Intel processor.

PC specs:

Lenovo y40, Windows 8.1, 64 bit.

Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00 GHz 2.59 GHz

Graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 275

RAM: 16 GB

I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

30 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Only 10 are included in this report. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

atikmdag.sys (ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination with the errors that have been reported for these drivers. Include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions on the web by users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Thanks

Edit: Thought i had it fixed earlier, but i guess not.

Ok. So I did everything the link you provided said to do and updated my drivers using drive booster. I assume that the BIOS doesn't need to be updated because when i ran the installer it said "The version of ROM file is the same as that of BIOS." Then I reinstalled the latest AMD Crimson drivers.

I do not get a BSOD anymore but when I try to run a game using the AMD card, the games freeze and an error message pops up on the start menu saying "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered.

You're saying i should upload the file from whocrashed?

It isn't crashing to BSOD anymore though so will it the crash dump still recognize the error?

It seems that whenever I install the old AMD drivers from the Lenovo website iI will get a BSOD and when using the latest Crimson drivers it will just freeze and an error message will be shown when starting a game.

I agree. The new AMD drivers are a pain. I had alot of problems with them before i had this issue.
I'm contemplating building a desktop and getting a Nvidia card instead.

Did you run driver booster, its likely something else is out of date too and could be effecting the drivers

Nvidia aren't perfect either but they don't have 2 different driver versions for their old cards - not sure this is a positive actually. You can't expect them to support all the cards forever as that would be an amazingly big driver and more likely to fail.

Both fans seem to be running ok. What sort of power connections am I looking for? I'm not seeing any visible loose connections or wires inside the laptop. I'm assuming both graphics cards are built into the motherboard, since I'm not seeing separate ones.
The battery is on its way out (I've been getting "weak battery" warnings), but I've been running the laptop while plugged in. I don't want to get a new battery if that's not the issue, as they are pretty expensive. Is there any way to check the power supply?

the only other thing would be to confirm you don't have any overclocking software running. GPU or CPU overclocking drivers. These show up in memory dumps if you want to put one up on a server I can take a quick look.

overall, check for bios and driver updates from lenovo. When I looked at the BIOS it looked like it was the current version available.
if you can not find driver updates for your machine, you might find that you can go into windows power management and find the intel wireless device and see if there is a power management setting where you can tell it not to sleep.

-you could change the memory dump type to kernel memory dump and the power info will not be stripped out of the memory dump.
-you could also turn off all of the sleep functions until you figure out which device is causing the problem.
(most likely it is on a 30 minute sleep timer)

--------------
the system was up 32 minutes, then tried to sleep and some device returned 0xc0000001 the operation failed, this resulted in the bugcheck.
INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR.

Generally this error will be caused by bugs in the BIOS or in the actual electronics of the machine. It would require firmware updates, bios updates and driver updates from the motherboard vendor.

I would start cmd.exe as an admin
then run
powercfg.exe /energy

it will make a report that you can read to see if it sees a problem.

you also have some problem with Intel® Wireless WiFi Link Driver - Intel® Wireless WiFi Link Adapter
\SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\Netwbw02.sys Tue Jan 05 01:39:08 2016
I would need a kernel memory dump rather than a minidump to figure out these type of problems.

OK. I've already gotten the latest BIOS updates from Lenovo and i ran Driver Booster 3 to update my drivers.

Thank you for all the help. Tomorrow I'll see if I can get it to crash to BSOD again by installing the older Lenovo drivers and I'll get a kernel memory dump.

you should install your drivers from your motherboard vendor rather than driver booster. The motherboard vendor will know what changes they made to the hardware, IE they will know how the default driver needs to be modified for their motherboard. A third party driver collector, often ships custom drivers as generic drivers with out knowing how the motherboard vendor setup the BIOS and electronic circuits on their boards.

I think you gpu got a internal memory error or detected a failing power condition in the GPU and hacked a bugcheck to shutdown the system.
your system was up for 26 seconds. I would be checking the power and make sure it is being cooled correctly. (if you can)
