I'm using my LG G4 with a Fiio A9 amp and a pair of ATH-M50x's. I've noticed that when I use the amp, that the output icon in the notification bar turns to an auxiliary cable. When the amp isn't being used and only the headphones are plugged in, I see a headphone icon. Is there any chance that the auxiliary output mode is degrading my sound quality compared to the headphone icon??? Because if so, I'd like to use my amp with the headphone icon/mode forced to be active.

hmm, never heard of such behavior on a smartphone. it sounds like the phone is auto regulating the output between an aux (low level amplification) signal and a headphone (heavier amped) signal based on what you have connected. at least that is what appears to be the case.

actually.. by not using the headphone amp in the phone its going to help the audio quality as double amping = distortion (albiet a slight amount in some cases). i would not worry about it unless you're having problems.
