Hi help, My Toshiba Satellite turn itself off when window is loading. I left it running in the BIOS for over an hour, as soon as I try to load windows it turn it self off. I cleared out the vents, put fresh heatsink compound between the processor and the heatsink, make sure the fan is running and it still turns off as soon as windows tries to load.

I get the feeling there is a component on the main board has failed. Can someone tell me which component will cause this problem and what can be done about it.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

If the laptop stays on BIOS for long a period of time that could only mean that it's not a hardware problem but a problem with Windows itself. Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help.
- First is to do a hard reboot, turn off the laptop then remove then battery and unplug its AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- If it will not work, try loading the laptop in Safe Mode and see if the same problem will persist or not.
- While the laptop is booting up, repeatedly press on F8 until it loads Advanced Boot Options then select Safe Mode.
- If it will load in Safe Mode, do disable all the startup items then reboot the laptop and it should load in the normal mode.
- But if the laptop will still not load in Safe Mode, do try reinstalling Windows and see if that will work or not.
- Last option if the same problem will persist while reinstalling Windows, remove the battery and test the AC adapter if it's working properly. Boot the laptop without the battery and see if it will stay on or not.
- If all these will not work, my last suggestion is to try a different HDD and see if it will work or not because if using a different HDD will still not work that means the problem is with the motherboard.

Thanks Laptop_Nerd, For all the suggestions. Most of those I already tried. The only one I haven't tried is to use a different hard drive. Before a posted for help, I wipe the hard drive and tried to re-install windows 7. As soon as the setup program tries to load the laptop turn itself off. The same thing it was doing when windows tries to load. I tried repeatedly and the same thing happens.

I will give your other hard drive idea a try and let you know the result.

Thanks

Hi Laptop_Nerd,

Thanks again. I tried the other hard drive idea but the same thing happens. When the setup program launches it turn itself off. From here on I feel I have three options, 1. Change the main board, 2. find the faulty component and change it or 3. throw away the laptop.
Option 2 is the one I pefer. I would like to get to the buttom of this.

Hi SemiGeek

The same problems are occurring with my laptop.
It will start up using hard restart and after 2 mins makes a click and dies. Both in safe mode and not and with or without the battery.

Have you tried the new hard drive and if so what are the results?

I'm at a loss here as I can't reinstall windows and I really hope it's not the motherboard.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dspark.

I have tried everything I can think of plus the various suggestions that was given to me. Nothing works, I am convinced that the problem is the motherboard. I tried to get a replacement motherboard but so far no luck. All the ones I see are faulty in some way. Which is no good.

So best of luck with your one.

Thanks

Hi SemiGeek,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I brought it to a repair shop and they suggested the problem to be the graphics card (GC). I'm a little dubious though. Quite an expensive replacement without a definite fix.

Do you think the GC would cause this problem without any problems with the screen when it decides to turn on? It would technically be a motherboard issue as the GC is integrated.

Hopefully you also fix yours.

Hi Dspark,

I agree with you, if the Graphic Card is at fault, then effectively it is the motherboard because the GC is built into the motherboard.

I was watching a youtube video on this same issue, but it was for a different model of toshiba laptop. It was caused by a faulty capacitor under the processor. Once the cap was change, the laptop no longer shutdown when windows loads. I was hoping to find a video on my specific model of Toshiba, but I was unlucky.

I am quite sure that the motherboard is key to the problem but where on the board?
I will keep on looking, If I find anything, I will let you know.
