I'm pretty new to buying headphones (well, headphones that aren't gaming headsets) so I'd like a little help finding a good pair of headphones for music and gaming. I'm currently looking at the Sennheiser HD 598 but would love some suggestions for other headphones and opinions on the 598. I do realize that I should probably stay away from gaming headsets if I want good sound quality and buy a headset from someone like Sennheiser or Audio-Technica.

My preferred budget for this is $150 but I could spend a bit more if I needed to. I'm not a really a fan of the design the ATH-A900X uses so.

I'd also appreciate suggestions for a soundcard or DAC that isn't too expensive ($100 - $120 or less), without one I'd just be using my MSI Z97 Gaming 5's onboard sound.

Thanks!

good soundcards.. xonar dx (better dac, average amp), creative z (average dac, stronger amp)
good dac+amp external.. audioengine d1, fiio e10k,

hd598 is a good general use headphone with decent specs all around. nice neutral sound signature. its good if you dont know what you want and as a first headphone.

if you're looking for something a bit different or exciting you should really tell us more about your taste profile and what kind of sound signature you want in a headphone. for example the dt770/dt990 are nice as well with a more v-shaped signature with greater bass and treble.
