Headphones with mic - I hear my own voice

I bought a set of headphones with a built-in mic so that I could make phone calls via the computer. While I was able to hear my own voice transmitted to my headphones (with a slight delay), the person I was calling did not hear me. The manufacturer's tech support was unable to resolve the problem.

Our son had an extra pair lying around and gave it to me. This time, the person at the other end was able to hear me, but I was also able to hear myself in my headphones (again, with a slight delay), making conversation next to impossible.

Why is my voice being directed to my headphones? Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

Solution
in your recording settings you have "listen to this device" checked for the microphone. this will broadcast your voice into your headphones (with a slight delay in some cases). right click volume icon, recording devices for the option.

Listen to this device was not checked. However, it was the default playback device and I changed that to the speakers (which I imagine will actually be the headphones). I can't test it at the moment, so I don't know if that change has done the trick. I hope to report within the next 12 hours whether it worked or not.

In the meantime, thank you for your suggestion.

It turns out that the mic at the other end was sending my own voice back to me. When I had the other person mute it, I ceased hearing my own voice. As a further check, I called a cell phone and had no problem there, either.

And somewhere along the way, I must have changed a setting or done something that allowed the person at the other end to hear me again.

So . . . case solved.

Thanks again, ssddx.
