Hi,

I've just purchased a UE48JS8500 4K TV and I have an LG BH7440P surround sound set. i want 5.1 surround from my PC so I could run a HDMI lead from my GPU to the surround and the from the receiver to the TV. I have heard some people experience lag when it is set up this way though?

The other way is a HDMI from the GPU straight to the TV and then an optical lead from my PC to the surround but I've also heard optical can have a delay. also im a right that the sound would still be 5.1 through optical of is it passed as 2 channel? my motherboard is a GA-Z97X- Gaming 3 and there is a lot of talk about audio but I can't find if it passes 5.1 through the optical port.

Which would be the best way to set up the connection?
Any other suggestions appreciated :)

Thank you.

i've been running hdmi pc gpu -> receiver -> tv for at least 4 years running everything from web browsing to movies to some games. i've never noticed lag and this is the highest quality method currently for both audio and video.

even if you did not have a receiver, hdmi handshake with some tvs is still a bit of a pain (sometimes you need to turn the tv and receiver on first before you start the pc). you will learn what works best with your equipment but that is the order i start mine up (i just push the buttons in a row with a second between them)

hdmi = full uncompressed 5.1 audio
optical = compressed 5.1 audio only and thats IF all your components accept 5.1 over optical. also it should be noted that if you go pc->tv hdmi then...

HDMI does pass 5.1 though and there is no input for all of the 3.5mm jacks on the back to pass audio from my pc to the receiver. that connection is only for pc speakers.

I run HDMI from my GPU through a surround receiver, and haven't noticed any lag vs going straight to the tv. My only issue is sometimes when I reboot the machine, I get no sound, and I have to reboot again. I think that's a driver issue, though.

Hi,

Okay thanks for letting me know, I heard about that earlier apparently it can be a HDMI handshake issue. Just thought I'd let you know to save time uninstalling and reinstalling drivers :p

Are you using a 4K TV as well?

optical = compressed 5.1 audio only and thats IF all your components accept 5.1 over optical. also it should be noted that if you go pc->tv hdmi then tv->receiver optical you will only get 2.0 sound likely as your pc will recognize the tv as a stereo device only and not give it 5.1 output. pc->receiver via optical however works fine in 5.1 if your pc soundcard and receiver both work with 5.1 over optical.

not on a 4k tv myself (my tv is old and is ccfl backlit before led backlighting was commonplace). specs if you hover over my avatar if you care. photos in signature if you care.

yes, no audio issue sometimes happens but its very rare for me. perhaps once a year maybe twice. restart works to fix.

Thanks for your reply ssddx,

I've just thought about something and it may cause a problem for me. I'm sure my receiver is HDMI1.4 which only allows for 4K up to 24fps? i know my tv has HDMI 2.0 capable of 4K at 60fps.

Going from my GPU > Reciever > TV will this limit me to 4K at 24 fps?

try it.. its quite easy to notice if you're only getting a 24fps signal vs 60. if you are getting limited then you could always just run a hdmi cable from pc->tv and another one from pc->receiver. or in a worst case scenario rely on optical from pc if you dont want to run two.

i cant say i have tested it myself since i'm still on 1080.
