Laptop screen flickers

My laptop screen flickers. Most of the time it flickers to black but there has been both horizontal and vertical lines (not at the same time). I connected the laptop to a TV and the flickering didn't occur on the TV screen but did on the laptop. The flickering does not happen when I'm playing a game. I had a broken hinge replaced last year and the flickering stopped for a while but started again maybe a month or two later. Thoughts on what this is and how to fix it?? Thank you in advance!

gpu sounds fine as it does not occur on a external screen, thinking the hinge problem may have slight damaged the cable ( as the cable is routed through the hinge area to screen) that goes from mobo to screen or bad/dirty/oxidised connectors on that cable. You can buy another cable, maybe from someone on ebay who strips failed laptops for parts. I would first look at that, screen itself would be the next step

I'd say it is the cable. They can be replaced and the problem should stop.

I don't think it has anything to do with the hinge because the flickering started well before the hinge broke and started again after it was fixed. Do you still think it could be the cable (does the cable have any specific name? It might make searching for a replacement easier).
