Dell 6320
Have read many posts about the "plugged in not charging" issue; none of the usual solutions work.

But here is the weird part; when I plug my ac unit in, the battery shows its being charged for a split second, then goes back to not being charged. the computer works fine on ac power and I just replaced the battery so its new.

Could the issue be the dc adapter on the motherboard? Even though it works fine on ac power? Is there any diagnostic to check the dc adapter?

thanks

the dc adapter have a dc voltage output printed on it. use a dc volt meter to check it. most bricks dont go bad the wires from years of use snap like headphone wires. your laptop if you google service parts there no ac to dc board there the power plug and the system board.

check that your power plug not broken. with laptops and batterys there are chips in the batterys that the laptop system board looks for if you used a 3 party battery it may not like it.

thanks for the quick reply; i've tried 3 different power supplies (bricks) with the same result.

i think something happened to my power plug [thanks for posting the part]

if you look at the link you posted, there is a round rubber piece that the power plug goes over; i don't have that. if i look at my power opening on my laptop i see several pieces of metal but no round plug [hopefully this makes sense to someone]. i wonder if that matters; the computer works fine on AC but doesn't charge so not sure if this is the issue or not.

i can get a used 6320 for $160 or so; the part is $15 but not sure what labor is to replace the part. so unclear as to what to do.

thanks

ok that sounds like at least an hour in labor i guess.

bottom line-is it plausible that the dc connection works ok for running on ac, but is mucked up somehow for charging the battery? or would it seem more plausible that my off brand 3rd party battery is the culprit? When I check the boot menu it says it can't determine what kind of ac adapter is connected.

thanks!

quotemsg=17693181,0,331249]hard part is for a tech to take the unit apart as the power plug is part of the case and to get it you have to take the top of the case off with the lcd screen. then put everything back together. [/quotemsg]
