Please do try these troubleshooting steps that may help.
- Start by doing a hard reboot, remove the battery and unplug the AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds and see if the same problem will persist or not.
- Next is to uninstall/reinstall the Touchpad driver, go to Device Manager and uninstall the Touchpad driver.
- Once uninstalled reboot your laptop and it should reinstall the driver automatically.
- If it will still not click or open an application when click on them try clicking on the Start button and see if it will open or not because if it does that means the mouse click is working but the application is not.
- Next is to run System Restore, restore it to an earlier date or time when it was working fine.
- If all these will not work your last option would be to reinstall Windows.

If the issue is that your mouse is registering clicks, but the commands are not being executed, then this is likely either a software problem or a very, VERY slow system that is taking a long time to respond. In this scenario, you would need to find what is causing the system to function so slowly (virus, too many programs running, fragmented hard drive, etc.).
