I was about to get a Lenovo T450 with a quad core i-4710Q processor for ~$1000 and throw my own SSD and add extra 8 ram in myself. Then last month, Lenovo killed the T450 and now you have to buy the T-460p which is a special performance model to get a quad core in a 14" Lenovo notebook. But its look like its 1400 for the base model and to get the high end you will get over $1600. For $799 I can get a Y700 with a quad core i7, 8 gb ram I can upgrade myself, and an HHD I can replace myself with my current SSD.... Is the Thinkpad really that much better? I take it around in my bag every day.. Is the T-460p worth it?

From what I can see on Lenovo's US site, the T460p is not yet available for sale.
The T460p and Y700 serves different markets. The T460p is a high end semi-rugged laptop that can survive a bit of punishment like being dropped 6 feet onto a hard floor with no internal damage. The Y700 is an entry level gaming laptop that is about 1 lbs heavier than the T460p. Drop the Y700 6 feet onto a hard floor and you are going to have problems. The T460p has features that corporate IT department will probably find useful, but not so for an average person.
A compromise is probably the 15.6" Dell XPS 15 9550 series. It is only slightly heavier than the ThinkPad T460p at 3.9lbs, and it is Infinity Display means it has very narrow bezels which means the laptop is only slightly larger than the average 14" laptop. All models with the exception of the least expensive version has a GTX 960m so if you want to play games on the laptop, you can.
The $1,200 model has a quad core i5-6300HQ CPU & 1TB HDD while the $1,450 version has a core i7-6700HQ CPU and 256GB SSD. Similar to the desktop variants, the Core i5 lacks Hyper Threading (HT). You need to determine if the programs you use can take advantage of HT.

I'm sure you can get a prior gen T model from resellers even if not from Lenovo directly. I love the T models, although a bit less since they changed the keyboard after the T420. If you don't use it for any heavy games, it's a good model to get, very reliable. If you get the s versions will be lighter and thinner.

It is funny. I ended up getting the y700-14ISK with a quad core and I upgraded the HDD to a 500GB SSD and Ram to 16GB. That said, I'm seriously looking at a XPS 15 9550
I find the Y700 a little heavy and I see the XPS has a larger screen in the same form, a better screen, more ports, faster SSD options and just nicer! The T460p fell in price but it run low powered version so the laptop cannot use the full power of a quad core. Sad, so I think the XPS will win.Similar threads
