ASUS laptop won't turn on - no fan, only 3 LEDs

Hi

My sister gave me her laptop as one day it just stopped working.
When I press the power button, only 3 LEDs turn on, but fan is not working, no screen, nothing. I bought a new battery (I knew their old one was, well, not in good condition) and tried with my charger <also asus, brand-new> but it is still the same.

I took out the battery and power supply then tried to hold down power button for 60s - didn't help.
Is there anything else I can do? Before you say warranty - laptop is 3 years old, it expired.

The motherboard probably needs replaced. You can try removing/replacing RAM and/or CPU (if it's a PGA-type CPU), but this sounds more like mainboard failure.

I have the same problem. I have an Asus x53s and when I press the power button three led lights turn on but no fan, no screen, nothing but the 3 lights (power, battery and the 'lamp').

But I also can't turn the lights off anymore by pressing the power button for several seconds.

A while ago I replaced the power jack because it was broken and then it worked again. But after several months it started to get hot again and the plastic even started to melt. And then it died. Except for the power lights.

So I recently replaced the motherboard and the battery hoping it would work. But it still doesn't..

I will keep you posted if I find the solution!
