Model numbers would help.
If your subwoofer is not self powered (has no power cord) then you do need an amplifier for it to work with a standard AV receivers which don't have sub amps built in. The receiver section of most home theater in a box systems has the sub amp built in so the sub from this type of system is usually not self powered.
If it is self powered then you will need to set up the receiver so it knows you have a subwoofer. The speakers set up menu in the receiver is where you would set this manually. If the receiver has auto set up you connect the mic and run that with the sub connected, turned on, and the sub level set at about 12 o'clock.
