Hi guys,

Its a bit long post, sorry

I'm about to purchase a new laptop and the options ive found dont fit the specs. Hope you might advise on best option/or throw something out custom i can check out. Basically a very fast 3d modelling design machine (final renders can be done overnight, or elsewhere), no freezing while manipulating complex models with onscreen materials (but no shadow effects etc)...

Its for personal use not for the company, i'll use it to skill up on new software, but its always nice to have the opportunity to finish off a job at home rather than go to the office.

Reqs:
25mm, 2.5kgs or close, 1-2hrs battery working fine as I will be plugged in most of the time, (i ride a bike most days)
15 .6 inch 3-4k screen
6820hk or close?
256gb Pci-e SSD and 1tb HDD, no raid
Quadro m3000m or gtx 980, gxx? Quadro i know is the professional option but have never used one, im not doing medical calcs or fine data/engineering analysis but if you know it helps alot with my apps i'd love to learn more

Best option i think (perhaps not) is a Clevo custom build...

Selected for weight and thickness, maxs out at 970M, the P750DM is 3.6kg with Quadro.... But a 6700k desktop cpu

P650RE
15.6" 4K QFHD Matte PLS 60Hz LED
Nvidia GTX 970M 6GB
Core i7-6820HK Processor (8M Cache up to 3.60 GHz
32GB DDR4 2133MHZ (4 x 8GB)
950 Pro 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD
1TB 7200RPM HDD
Intel 8260 AC Dual Band WIFI/BT
No External Optical Disc Drive Selected
Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit
3 Year Metabox Platinum Care

Thats $3600u

I run a 7970 over 3x FHD at work which is fine for the screens with basic models but 4k, and i may run a second display off it (not essential and a rarity), can m3000m or the older k2100m handle the pixels, or better to go DirectX gpus. Theres not alot out there for 'fps' other than gaming

Also scheduled cloud backup, no experience there**** Can anyone advise
G-sync... Will that lessen to load on the GPU at 4k?

$3800-4000Au preferred budget, will go to 4-4.5-5 if its impressive, so say 3.5-3.8US, please say it can't be done, happy to take a slap in the face and reduce the specs (looking at the Bronze keyboard G3 Powerbook, a trusty beast in its day but it cost 5.5k in 2000 for the base processor with 64mb RAM) ouch

Thanks for your help guys, i appreciate it and after a while of looking you need that unbiased 2nd opinion.
Cheers, Daz

Things to know.

GPU's are used for acceleration of certain rendering tasks not all. For any rendering CPU is of greater importance and mid range GPU's are fine
Quadro's are not necessary, however part of their price is guaranteed compatibility with certain programs out of the box plus ECC on some cards but that isn't real important for rendering.

The CPU: Yes you have a desktop part but remember that it is still in a laptop and thus stuck with both laptop power and thermals. It will preform better than any mobile part but will still not quite be up to the performance of a proper desktop. If you want faster renders buy a better CPU or two

Running a second monitor is fine because the monitor only displays what is rendered "fps" is...

Running a second monitor is fine because the monitor only displays what is rendered "fps" is completely dependent on render speed.
G-sync will have no effect. its only real use is gaming.

Backups: whatever you want blackblaze, google, MS, dropbox, crashplan, etc.

Clevo custom builds are probably your best bet in this case.

im looking for something very similar, but very keen on a quadro gpu, but maybe a xeon setup too.
Can't really decide between a metabox and msi ws72
