I have a headset with two jacks, mic and speaker and i have a laptop with a combined mic and speaker input jack. So i bought a adapter, one with three things and plugged it in, but there is no new mic that shows up. I've tried updating drivers, and when i click listen to device for my default mic, i can hear my speaker sounds and this loud pitched ringing. PLEASE HELP

What kind of an adapter did you buy? You need this kind of an adapter http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-headsets-separate-headphone-microphone/dp/B004SP0WAQ, it has 4 contacts in the plug. You probably bought one with 3 contacts only. You can also use a combo usb sound card like this one http://www.amazon.com/external-Adapter-Windows-Microphone-SD-CM-UAUD/dp/B001MSS6CS/ref=pd_bxgy_23_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1RDEPKQP2FGQVVHSH6H9

you may want to fix that first link. its broken.[/strike]
looks like you fixed it already.

@loki
yes, you need a 4pole 3.5mm connector or TRRS (tip ring ring sleeve) which has 4 separate parts on the connector going to two 3pole TRS (tip ring sleeve) female connectors to plug the headphones and mic into. either that or a little soundcard like ron listed. from the sound of things you bought the wrong kind of adapter cable (i'm guessing a splitter).
