This morning I plugged in my laptop and after a moment heard some sort of sparking sound. I realized that during the night one of my dogs chewed a bit on the power cable. When looking at it I heard another, louder spark from the cable then a loud click from my computer and it shut off. After plugging in a backup power cable it restarted but the battery was no longer charging.
In the system tray it says connected, charging. However, the battery was losing its charge extremely quickly. It went from 35 to 7‰ in about 3 minutes. Once it hit 0 it stayed on for another 20 minutes or so before shutting off again.
Now it won't turn on at all. There is no indicator light active on the front (there was until it died) and it does not turn on at all.
Final note: before it died I attempted to remove the battery. It immediately shut off and would not turn on until the battery was reinserted. It turned on after I put it back in access survived another few minutes with the battery in and plugged in.

Hi,

Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help in solving the issue.
- Start by observing the AC adapter itself if it has exposed wires that may cause more damage.
- Next is to test you AC adapter if it's supplying enough voltage to power or charge the laptop.
- If the laptop does shut down without its battery then the problem is the AC adapter.
- If you have another AC adapter that has the same voltage do test if the same problem will persist or not.
- If a different charger will still not work that means it's within the motherboard that has the problem the charging port to be exact.

Thanks for the quick reply. As I mentioned I do have 2 identical chargers and neither work. One is a bit frayed but the other is completely fine. If it is a problem with the motherboard or charging jack how big of a problem is that? Is the computer toast or can it be salvaged without costing too much?
