Hello everyone, I have an asus g751JY that i'm planning on selling soon because I have a desktop computer now. My brother uses Autocad software for his work everyday, he asked me to give my laptop to him. But I really doubt autocad would need the same requirements as video games would. Because I know there are different computer components for 3d design software out there. So in comparison, which computer would be more appropriate for him?

I'm not going to buy a new Asus so the price is not going to be a problem. So "Buy HP because it's cheaper." is not the case. Also do you have any other suggestions within the same price range as the HP? If not what are the key components for 3d design software?

2D autocad requires a decent CPU (single threaded). Intel is usually a good choice, higher the clock speed the better.

3D autocad (think Inventor Pro) requires a GPU to help offload some of the load. Both 2d and 3d are single threaded so higher cpu clock speed is good, more cores is not necessarily better.

The good thing about AutoDesk branded software is that it uses directX (not OpenCL/GL), this means that regular gaming cards can be used for the 3d workloads. You do not need expensive workstation graphics cards.

You might also why to test it real quick. autocad and the like depending on exactly what you are rendering will load CPU/GPU to 100% (more so than games) for extended periods of time. Some laptops simply don't have cooling capacity to deal with that.
