Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yes the LCD video cable. It fractured meaning the screen didnt work so replaced it. Where would the sensor be? Could I have connected it wrong way round on reassembly. The screen currently comes on when the lid is about half to quarter of an inch from being closed. Its almost like I could have reversed the cable connections on a micro switch which activates with opening and closing the lid but I dont recall anything like that.

Happy to [try to] help. :)

Honestly, I have no idea where the sensor is. Without having previously worked on the G500, all I can say is that's something another tech would have to answer for you - preferably a Lenovo tech. I don't think the cable can be connected improperly very easily; from what I've seen on most systems, the connection at the monitor can go either way, while the connection at the board either can also, or it has a notch in the receptacle to prevent improper seating.

Do you know which type of cable you used (LVDS & pin count, or eDP, etc.)?

Laptop LED Screen Cable for Lenovo g505 PN/MPN DC02001PS00
Cable Type: Laptop LED Screen/Panel Cable
Compatible Part Number: DC02001PS00

this is as good as I can do I am afraid. Cable replacement was reasonably straight forward, pretty sure it couldnt fit any other way .
Again many thanks for your input.

Firstly thanks for this, secondly how the heck does that happen??? It is bizarre. If I could type and see through a half inch gap I would be fine but how do i fix this?? How could it happen. Sorry thinking out loud. Do you think there is a solution to this???
