Hi.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEF2S1E which is running slow. Simple functions such as double clicking have a lag and everything generally runs slow. Example...right click mouse takes 5 seconds to bring up menu.

I have 4GB RAM 500GB HDD and AMD Phenom II P820 Triple-Core Processor × 3 so it should be pretty fast.

I have tried Win7, Win10 and Ubuntu and have same issues so think may be hardware issue.

Memtest says all ok and SMART reports 123 bad sectors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Solution
First thing, replace the hard drive and install Windows on the new one. The CPU and RAM is enough to run Windows without issues, but you should not have bad sectors on the hard drive.

Thanks.

Was afraid that may be my only option but wanted a second opinion.

At least I have learned never to buy a second hand laptop. Should have bought new.

Thanks again.

You just need to find the right used laptop that has been tested properly. Need to look it over before buying. As someone that works on used systems often (I usually sell or fix a laptop a week outside of my normal job), it's just a matter of checking over the system properly. I don't let a system leave my care without a full hardware test. Often spending $40-50 on a new hard drive makes an old slow system run well again. Many people looking to replace a laptop due to slowness can just fix theirs up a bit and save hundreds.
