ASUS Laptop IPS monitor Can't be Identified - Is it dead?

Laptop was working fine yesterday, woke up this morning and the screen is totally black. Immediately tried fn + f7, f8, nothing happens. The monitor appears to be dead.

It is an ASUS N550JK 15.6-Inch Laptop, Windows 8.1

Plugged in an external monitor which is working fine via HDMI cable. Shining a bright light into the screen doesn't show anything, it's just black.

Checking display options in the control panel shows that the external monitor is the only option available, and "Another display not detected."

Is there a chance the hardware is still working and I just need to do something to let Windows know that it's there again? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try taking apart the laptop and access the cable where the monitor is connected to the board. And test with that a little. You might have to buy a new monitor for it.

Ok thanks for the reply. I went ahead and ordered a new screen, I will open it up and return the screen if I can fix it without installing the new one. One thing though - I just realized that the touchscreen still works - any idea what that means and if it will still work if I replace the screen? I never use the touchscreen, but I don't really want to downgrade the capability because the screen I ordered isn't advertised as a touchscreen. It's my understanding that the touchscreen is separate from the monitor somehow.

If you replace your touchscreen display with a non-touchscreen display, you'll lose that function altogether. The feature is built into the LCD panel.

Correct, the touchscreen works (touching it moves things around on the external monitor) but the screen is totally black. Windows doesn't think the built in display even exists in any of the display options I can find. This happened overnight out of nowhere, no physical damage. I'm very confused too.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification!

That is a strange case, though. If you want the touch feature still, you may need to return the screen you purchased and find a panel that advertises that it's a touch screen.

You can test the screen you already purchased, just to make sure the problem isn't the video cable. If it works, then you can go from there as to whether to keep it or exchange it for a touch panel.

I ended up taking it in to a laptop repair place and they had to make a small soldering repair to something on the motherboard. I'm out $150 but I'm glad I did that rather than opening it up and trying to poke around inside myself. Now I just have a screen to return and everything's good as new.

I began to suspect that the screen was still good once I realized the touchscreen still worked. No idea how the motherboard became damaged. Thanks for the help.

I have exact the same issue with an ASUS S500C. I tried to move the cables that go from the monitor to the motherboard but nothing helped.

What do I need to solder on the motherboard?

I'm now using my laptop with a external screen.
