While trying to restore the laptop to factory settings, I got error messages, and inadvertently wiped out the hard drive. How do I start from here.

you mean it wiped out the recovery partition? And you didn't make a recovery disk when you first got the laptop? you might able get one free, if it still in warranty or you will have to buy it from toshiba.

What do you want? Do you want your files back? Do you want to reinstall the OS?
Which Version of Windows did you have?

I just called. I do not have a back up disk. It is no longer under warranty, so Toshiba wants to charge me for a new copy. Since I find this completely unreasonable, I am going to use a copy of Windows 8 from someone else, then update it to Windows 10 anyway.

If your computer came with windows 8 you don't have to worry about getting the key.

Windows 8.1 install media creator.

Windows 10
