separates or headset?

if separates you could go for a hd518 $70 (neutral) or its upgrade the hd558 $100 (better pads and build quality) or ad500x $80 (bass light for fps gaming).

for a mic you could go with the modmic $40 (attaches to headphones), the cheaper moovmic $25 (like modmic but not as good), a cheaper mic like the blue snowball, c01u, atr2500 or if you had not much money the neewer products arent bad (not as high volume or bassy response but not bad clarity).

if you have crap onboard audio, wanted virtual surround sound but dont have the option or feel the need for an upgrade a xonar dg may be worth thinking about as well. generally onboard is fine unless you notice issues or have notably bad onboard.

a general use gaming headset. good quality audio and convenient mic. for +$30 you can get a better built headphone with better pads. for -$30 you can remove the soundcard if you have one or feel you do not need one. for -$15 you can drop to a moovmic if you do not care as much about higher quality audio.

hd518 $70
xonar dg $30
modmic $40
$120 total

if recording audio is very important to you (if you're a starter youtuber) then perhaps this following build. the mic is really quite good given the price (its a cheap mans at2020). as before -$30 if you already have a soundcard or do not need one or +$30 if you want better build quality cans. a boom mount, pop filter and shock mount for the mic would be suggested if you are into semi-professional recording.

hd518 $70
xonar dg $30
atr2500usb $65
$165 total

if you are a highly competitive gamer, the ad500x or ad700x may suit you better as they provide better advantage in fps gaming due to wider soundstage and less bass response (you can hear footsteps easier). some people find virtual surround (dolby headphone on asus cards, sbx/cmss3d on creative ones, or razer virtual free download without any [though its not as good]).

if you want choices narrowed down a bit, you might want to tell us what equipment you have, if you're happy with your onboard audio and what you plan to do with the equipment as well as your preferences.
