Can a Pop-Up ad give you a virus even if you just close it?

Hello.
About a week ago, a website I used quite a bit gave me a pop-up ad as I began browsing around it. I closed instantly and left the website since I got a bit paranoid.

The question is, I just closed the pop-up, can it still give me a virus? I use Chrome, and it's always updated, and so far my computer hasn't shown any signs of virus infection.

I't's not paranoid. Some websites contain popups that also have embedded HTML scripts which are activated to refer to different web addresses when you attempt to close the window. This can lead to unforeseen viruses or malware getting onto your system. This is how a majority of Malware actually infects systems. Malware can then lead to more serious Trojan viruses infecting your system.

If you are ever in doubt about a pop-up window. The best thing to do is use the ALT + F4 (or close the browser manually within task manager) to close the browser windows completely. This will ensure that you don't get any sneaky referral popups & infections.

It is best to run an Antivirus scan and Anti Malware scan after situations like this.

When I clicked the "X" on the pop-up window it closed normally. I already did a scan on my PC and nothing came up, everything is doing fine so I guess im safe.
Still, thanks... I got paranoid because the site never did it before so it caught me by surprise.
