I recently purchased a X1 Carbon and decided to upgrade the M.2 SSD to the Samsung 950 Pro. I purchased the NVME version not knowing the difference. When I boot from the SSD I get an error halt "2103: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) Press ESC to continue" error. After pressing ESC I am able to boot install windows and such. But every time it reboots I get a beep and that error MSG. I am wondering if I need to return this drive or if a bios update will allow NVME since it is Intel 9 series. I also notice when in Windows that the drive is listed correctly. I have updated to the latest bios.

Hi, Thanks for the response. I probably didn't list this question correctly. I guess I am saying The X1 does boot from this drive (With a minor detection error halt) it is PCIe with 4 lanes. So I wonder if a simple BIOS update will remedy this since it clearly will run on the drive and a requirement of Intel series 9 chipset is that it will boot from NVME. This X1 is a 9 series. But Lenovo says no NVME. Does anyone know if NVME is hardware dependent above 4 lane PCIe or purely software meaning a Bios update is all that's needed? Thanks again!

Hi Kenneth_16,

Re: Carbon X1 3rd Gen NVME support -- Update situation?

I also own a Lenovo Carbon X1 3rd Gen, and hoping for NVMe support.

***So for your NVMe "Samsung 950 Pro", after your half year of usage, did using this NVMe SSD cause any other problems (data corruption, cannot use Product Recovery DVD, etc.)?

***Did you use Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for your Carbon X1 3rd Gen?

(Understood that using this NVMe SSD causes a minor detection error halt at bootup, after which pressing [Esc] sidesteps this problem and you can operate Windows 7 normally).

Thanks a lot in advance for your advice!

Hello it seems i have the same problem.
I bought the Toshiba XG3 SSD THNSN51T02DU7 M.2 2280 NVMe 1TB SSD which does give me the 2103 detecton error too.
Installing WIndows starts until it seems i can partition and format the SSD but further instalation failed because of the error that this Hardware is not supported.
I do not know much about tech details and details on this. Is there a driver or somethning i could load ?

Thanks it sounds maybe a dumb question, but i have to start somewhere.

Thanks
