Hi; I'm new to the forum & the toms hardware website in general. I desperately need help w an issue with my Lenovo Y50-70 laptop that I bought in Jan 2015.

The specs for my laptop are:
- 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4710HQ Processor (2.50GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
- Windows 8.1 64
- 15.6" FHD LED AntiGlare Backlight (1920x1080) Note: I've swapped the original screen for a better IPS pannel
- Integrated Intel HD graphics 4600
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
- 16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM

The issue is that I cant get the laptop to use the full res of 2560x1440 when I connect it to my Asus PB278Q external 2k monitor. The screen resolution of 2560x1440 is not even shown as an option in Windows.

Now I've looked into if this laptop can actually support 2k, and supposedly it can support up to 4k. When I checked the graphics card specs via Nvidia website, it also says that it should be able to support 2560x1440.

I've tried uninstalling/installing/updating multiple releases of both the Intel & Nvidia drivers. I've checked Lenovo's website for any new drivers as well. I've tired setting the Nvidia control panel to always use the Nvidia card, but nothing works. I've also called Lenovo tech support & they can't figure it out either & only say that perhaps the laptop cant support 2k, but they're not sure either which is not a solution. Plus, when I look up the specs, it seems it should be able to; yet there are tons of posts online w many people having the same issue with the y50.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Anyone out there w a y50 like mine that has gotten the 2k/4k res to work or that knows for sure if it's capable or not?

More so, how can I even determine for sure if my Y50 is really capable of 2k or 4k? Why wouldn't it be able to handle 2560x1440 res if the video card is rated for that & above & if i'm connecting it using the proper cables?

I only have an HDMI out, and according the monitor specs, 2560x1440 can be achieved even through HDMI 1.4, Display port, and dvi. I even tried a $50 display port to HDMI adapter that's rated to 4k which also didn't work. No matter what i do, 2560x1440 is not an option under screen resolution... I'm so confused about if this is even a hardware or software issue & have no idea where to start?

PLEASE HELP, THANKS.

Be sure to press the right screen in the screen resolution manager.(should say "2" on it) + Your HDMI port is probably a 1.2hdmi not and 1.4hdmi=> I think this only has something to do with the Refresh rate going from 60 to 30 but i could be wrong.

Update me

Greetings, atullall:

I have a Y50 with identical specs, except I (still) have the awful standard TN screen.

I think it's a case of marketing lingo, i.e. the Y50 is available in 3K and 4K versions, but it depends on the screen installed on the laptop. Your screen is designed for 1920x1080 and that's what it's going to display regardless of the external monitor. There are 4K replacement screens for sale on eBay, which may be your next stop.

When I view 4K videos on YouTube, my Y50 freaks out and displays in something resembling 480p resolution or worse.

Cheers,
GreyCatz.

Hi Thanks for your reply. Selecting the "#2" doesn't seem to be an option, but I know it's the correct monitor becasue it 'identifies' itself correctly when in the screen res settings; its just hat there is no option for anything higher than 1920x1080. How can I find out if my HDMI port is 1.2 or above. When I go to Nvidia's website the specs for the GTX 860M seem to be 4k ready, so 2k shouldn't be an issue. I honestly feel this is a software/driver issues rather than a hardware issue, but I could always be wrong. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply... Hmm this could be, and if so this sucks. However, after all the research i've done it's my understanding that as long as the video card is capable of putting out 2k or 4k, and as long as you have the correct cables & ports you should be able to get a higher res. It seems that the graphics card capability is the deciding factor. Anyone out there know if this is true or not?

By the way any plans on upgrading your TN panel to something better? It's super easy/cheap and worth it in my opinion & i think you'll really like the results.
