I bought my Hitachi 55" Ultravision LCD TV in November of 2011. It has been a great TV. About a year ago we started to see that about half the screen (left side) was having problems displaying white. It's kind of hard to describe The left side of the screen displays color just fine unless there is a lot of white in the picture and then the whole left side fades out. The images are still there, but they are really faded, but the left side is bright white. The problem only effects the left side of the screen and it is divided right down the middle like a knife. Since it only happens when there is a lot of white on the left side of the screen and not any other time, we just kept using it that way.
Then one day when we turned it on, and after the warm up period, the whole screen went bright white. Turning it off and then on again many times will eventually fix the problem and the screen will come up normal (except for the left half displaying white). As long as we don't turn it off, it just works fine. It has been this way for many months and we just deal with it. Some times it takes only a few on and off cycles to get it to work properly and other times it takes several dozen. There is no discernible patter to why it starts working properly. When watching most movies, we don't even notice anything wrong with it at all. It's only when there is a lot of white on the screen. We got a new WII U for Christmas and because most of the screens have a lot of white in them, it is really a problem.
So I am wondering if anyone can tell me what might be the problem? I really like the tv a lot, but LED TVs are really cheap these days with the new UHD TVs on the market and I don't want to spend a whole lot on this old LCD. I am no electronics technician by any stretch of the imagination, but I am kind of handy. I once fixed a 18" HP LCD monitor with a burned out motherboard (MB) by replacing it with the MB out of a cracked 14" Dell LCD monitor. Still works today 6 years later. If the problem is a simple fix like replacing a MB, I might be able to do that. Of course it would depend on how much the new MB cost.
