Is it true that the hard drive is toast after a couple of years?

I have what I thought was a good laptop, the Asus S550 CA was a good machine. I friend of mine told me that the Asus notebook after a short time had it's hard drive crash as did mine. Is this a common problem with this product. They wanted to charge me almost as much as I paid for the unit to repair it. I've had several brands, but this is the first one that this happened to it.

Solution
Given the environment they have to live in, what with the general lack of cooling, the thumps, bumps & other abuse they have to endure, it's amazing that laptop hard drives last as long as they do.

Absolutely not! Of course it will depend on hours the drive is in use. If you leave the machine on 24/7, the life of the drive will seem shorter than if you use it in a normal manner. But even 24/7 usage can be set to have the drive spin down when not in use for a certain amount of time.

I suspect your HDD will last the life of the rest of the laptop... mine always has.

however there is no doubt the hard drive will fail eventually, probably within 8 years. But generally given how cheap they are and as long as you don't drop your laptop, it should most likely stand the test of time.
